MTN South Sudan Launches E-Waste Management Initiative
MTN South Sudan, in collaboration with the WEEE Centre and the National Communications Authority, has launched a major initiative to manage electronic waste (e-waste) as part of its ESG strategy. The program aims to promote sustainability and address Africa’s growing e-waste problem. Currently, only a few African nations have formal e-waste policies or producer responsibility laws. MTN’s initiative involves proper disposal of devices like computers and printers. Dr. Tom Musili of the WEEE Centre noted that a substantial amount of e-waste has already been collected.
E-Waste Challenges in Malawi
In Malawi, environmental experts like Mathews Malata are calling for stronger policies and public awareness to manage e-waste, which poses serious health and environmental risks. He stressed the need for research and safe disposal methods. Private company Omicron Limited has been recycling e-waste for three years in compliance with national regulations. Its director, Lindiwe Mzungu, emphasized collaboration with government bodies and the potential of technologies like real-time tracking to improve efficiency.
