The European Union has launched project STOPP to promote sustainable food packaging and reduce plastic waste
The initiative will run for three years and covers the entire food packaging value chain, including the agricultural food industry. It has been introduced to help cut packaging waste by 2030, in line with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive.
A total of 14 partners from seven countries will establish circular strategies for plastic usage and processing. They will also create awareness campaigns within a multi-actor network.
Actions cover:
・Analysing the impact of plastic waste in different ecosystems
・Monitoring the current use of plastics in the food packaging industry
・Creating a sustainable business model that can be replicated
・Taking steps to enhance recycling
・Conducting a customer voice study
The results could provide a basis for the European decision-making process regarding future packaging.
The innovative scheme is led by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. Partners include the University of Vaasa, the National Institute of Chemistry of Slovenia, Remondis Recycling, GreenDelta, Plastics Recyclers Europe, Veolia, Braskem and reCIRCLE.
